What is the Bright House Networks 21st Century Star Teacher Awards? The Bright House Networks 21st Century Star Teacher Awards is our national competition for educators who use content from our newly enhanced web portal, www.ciconline.org, to develop “digital citizenship” among students in the classroom. Educators must teach in one of Bright House Networks service areas.
What is Cable in the Classroom? Cable in the Classroom (CIC) promotes the visionary, sensible, responsible, and effective use of cable’s broadband technology, services, and content in teaching and learning. CIC also advocates digital citizenship and supports the complimentary provision, by cable industry companies, of broadband and multichannel video services and educational content to the nation’s schools.
Who is eligible to enter? Educators (K-12) who work at state accredited public or private U.S. schools located within Bright House Networks service areas.
What does the winner receive? Each individual winner receives a cash prize of $1,000 and a Tiffany's Crystal Star, and will be participating in local recognition activities.
May I enter as a single applicant and as part of a teacher team? Yes, but each entry must be a different project. Individual projects may not be entered multiple times under different applicant names.
How many teachers may participate on a team? Up to three teachers may collaborate as part of a team.
If a team wins, does each teacher receive $1,000? Yes. Each individual winner receives a cash prize of $1,000.
May I enter two different projects? Yes. You can enter with two different teams, or as a single teacher.
How do you select a winner? An impartial panel of knowledgeable professionals in education and television will judge all entries. Judging will be based on the following criteria:
Overall application of educational programming and online content to enrich the student’s educational experience.
Successful integration of cable broadband access and applications for effective teaching and learning.
Integration of digital tools in the teaching of digital literacy, ethical behavior online, and civic engagement.
Who are the judges? Each year we select education and television leaders from around the country to serve as judges for the program.
When are applications due? The application deadline for this year's program is Friday, May 13, 2011, at 11:59:59pm.
Will I get application materials back at the end of the program? No. Unfortunately, we are unable to return materials, so we suggest that when possible, applicants submit copies instead of original materials. If you do choose to submit original materials, we suggest you keep copies for your records. We will no longer return any materials submitted.
Do I need to submit my entry in a binder? No. Beginning in February 2011, you will be able to submit your entry online. Accompanying support materials must be sent in a binder to ensure that all your information remains together, and that it can be easily identified. We recommend that you submit your entry’s support materials in a notebook binder that is clearly labeled.
What additional materials should I submit with my application? While no additional materials are required, it is recommended that you submit support materials only if you think it helps paint a complete picture of the project and its impact on students. These can come in the form of lesson plans, audiovisual presentations (DVD only accepted), student reaction pieces, photos, and letters from community leaders and/or students and materials that were produced specifically for your project.
If I have already entered a project in one teacher competition, may I enter it again in Bright House Networks 21st Century Star Teacher Award competition? Yes, absolutely, as long as it meets the criteria as described in the completion rules. If you are submitting a project that has already won an award from another competition, please include that information with your entry.
How many awards are given each year? Bright House Networks will select up to ten projects each year to be honored as 21st Century Star Teacher Award worthy projects. Bright House Networks reserves the right to select fewer than ten projects based on the quality and innovation of the projects submitted, and the judge’s recommendations.
What if the audiovisual is a PowerPoint with vocal recordings? You may use whatever audiovisual elements are needed as part of your project submission. However, you must submit all the necessary files to ensure the materials can be properly reviewed. Any questions can be emailed to TeacherAwards@mybrighthouse.com.
Is my school in the Bright House Networks service area? Click here to find out if your school is within the Bright House Networks service area.
Does my school have to be serviced by Bright House Networks for me to enter? Yes. The program is open to projects that were implemented in schools serviced by Bright House Networks.
How many winners are chosen by district or school location? Winners are not selected based on school district or location but instead are selected on the merits of their project entries.
Can you nominate a teacher for the 21st Century Star Teacher Award? No. The 21st Century Star Teacher Awards is a competition in which educators must submit projects they have developed and fully implemented for review by our judges. The winners are selected based on the merits of their project. The personal accomplishments or popularity of the educator do not impact the judge's decision when determining the winning projects.
Can I apply online? Yes. An online application will be available in February 2011, but all support materials must be sent in a binder. Register today to receive updates, and we’ll notify you once the application is available.
If I have won in the past can I submit an entry for this year? Yes. Past winners may submit an entry. While there is absolutely no guarantee of a repeat win, the enhancements made in this new program will provide a level playing field amongst past winners and new entrants.
