How do I connect my Xbox 360 to Xbox LIVE?

You can connect your Xbox 360 to Xbox LIVE through your Internet connection using:

The simplest connection is directly from your cable modem or gateway to your Xbox unit. But if you would like to run your computer and the Xbox at the same time or if you do not want to repeatedly have to switch your connection back and forth between your computer and your Xbox, you need a router.

To connect your Xbox 360 to Xbox LIVE using an Ethernet cable:

  1. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the modem or gateway, and the other end to the corresponding port on the back of the console.
  2. Turn on your Xbox 360. The console now should be connected to the Internet, and you need to test the connection.
  3. On your console, navigate to My Xbox, and select System Settings. The System screen opens.
  4. Select Network Settings. The Network Settings screen opens.
  5. Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection. (If you are prompted to update your console software, select Yes.)
    • If the connection is successful, the following message is displayed under Xbox Live Status on the right side of the Networks Settings screen: Xbox LIVE is up and running.
    • If there is a Failed message, select More information, and follow the instructions.
  6. Once you have a connection, join Xbox Live to take part in online gaming.
