How do I configure Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard for my email account?

We recommend using IMAP settings on all devices to prevent errors.

  • Using IMAP and POP3 simultaneously (or using POP3 across multiple devices) can cause mail synchronization errors when trying to send, receive or access email.
  • You might get an error message such as this: “The mail server denied access to your account because another mail client was using it.”

For more information, see Differences in How IMAP and POP3 Email Protocols Work.

To configure OS X v10.5 (Leopard) or v10.6 (Snow Leopard) Mail for your email account:

  1. In the Dock, click the Mail icon Mail icon. The Mail application opens.
    • If this is the first account you have added, the Welcome to Mail window opens.
    • If the Welcome to Mail window does not open, from the File menu, select Add Account. The Add Account window opens. The following process is the same whether you are adding your first account or an additional account.

  2. Enter your Full Name.
  3. Enter your Email Address.
  4. Enter your email Password.
    • Your email account password is stored and used to log in to your email account automatically when you open Mail.
  5. Click Continue. The Automatically set up account check box is displayed and is selected by default.

  6. Click Create. The application checks the connection to the appropriate IMAP or POP/SMTP servers, and then your Inbox opens.

  7. To check for new email, click the Get Mail icon Get Mail Icon.

If you received an error message, correct the information you entered, and click Continue.

If you clear the Automatically set up account check box and need to enter your server information manually, see What are the incoming and outgoing email server addresses for email?
