What is a Digital Video Recorder (DVR)?

A DVR enables you to digitally record TV shows to watch whenever you want. You can rewind and fast forward anything you have recorded, or pause live TV and begin watching again later, ensuring you never miss a moment of what you want to watch.

DVR service includes a number of features:

  • Because the DVR is always recording, you can pause live TV. Then you can rewind to see something you missed or fast forward back to live TV.
  • Just as with a DVD player, you can rewind or fast forward any of your saved recordings.
  • Everything is saved directly to the DVR's internal hard drive without the need for VHS tapes or DVDs.
  • You can control all of your DVR's settings and recordings through your remote control.
  • The DVR works with your on-screen Guide to let you schedule future recordings automatically, even recurring programs or every new episode of your favorite TV series.

DVRs and On Demand programming

DVRs do not record On Demand programming. This includes Movies On Demand and premium On Demand channels such as HBO On Demand or Subscription On Demand programming.

On Demand channels have the same pause, rewind, and fast forward capabilities as DVR recordings and are already available to watch anytime. For more information, see What is On Demand programming?
