How do I connect my iPhone or iPad to a wireless network?

How you connect to a wireless network varies depending on whether you are joining:

There are risks associated with joining an unsecured network. If the network is your own, you should consider adding security. For more information, see Why should I be concerned about the security of my wireless network?

To connect your iPhone or iPad to an unsecured network:

  1. Select . The Settings screen opens.
  2. Select . The Wi-Fi Networks screen opens.
  3. Make sure Wi-Fi is . Your iPhone or iPad scans for available networks, which are displayed in the Choose a Network list box. An unsecured network does not carry the icon.
    • If you are already connected to a network, is displayed before the network name.
  4. Select the unsecured network to which you want to connect. is displayed before the network name, and is displayed at the top of your screen.

To connect your iPhone or iPad to a secured network:

  1. Make sure you have the following information for the network you want to join:
    • Network name (SSID).
    • Security type.
    • Password. The password may also be referred to as a passphrase, network security ID, or key.
  2. Select . The Settings screen opens.
  3. Select . The Wi-Fi Networks screen opens.
  4. Make sure Wi-Fi is . Your iPhone or iPad scans for available networks, which are displayed in the Choose a Network list box. A secured network carries the icon, but not all secured networks may be displayed.
    • If you are already connected to a network, is displayed before the network name.
  5. Select a network from the list, or select Other. The Other Network screen is displayed.
  6. In the Name text box, enter the network name, or SSID.
  7. Select Security. The Security screen opens.
  8. Select the security type from the list. is displayed for that security type.
  9. Select . You are returned to the Other Network screen.
  10. Enter the network Password.
  11. Select . You are returned to the Wi-Fi Networks screen. is displayed before the network name, and is displayed at the top of your screen.

Connecting Your iPhone or iPad to a Known Network

Once you have connected to a network, your device finds that network and connects to it automatically if your device is in range. This is true if you leave Ask to Join Networks off on the Wi-Fi Networks page. If you turn it on, a message is displayed each time a network is detected, asking whether you want to join that network.
