How do I configure Windows Live Mail for my email account?

We recommend using IMAP settings on all devices to prevent errors.

  • Using IMAP and POP3 simultaneously (or using POP3 across multiple devices) can cause mail synchronization errors when trying to send, receive or access email.
  • You might get an error message such as this: “The mail server denied access to your account because another mail client was using it.”

To configure Windows Live Mail for your email account:

  1. Open Windows Live Mail.
  2. On the navigation bar on the left, click Add e-mail account. The Add an E-mail Account wizard opens.
    • When you run Windows Live Mail for the first time, the Add an E-mail Account wizard opens automatically.

  3. Enter your E-mail address.
  4. Enter your email Password.
    • Remember password is selected by default. If you leave this option selected, you will not have to enter your password when using Windows Live Mail; anyone who has access to your computer will also have access to your email account.
  5. In the Display Name text box, enter your name as you would like it to appear in outgoing messages.
  6. Click Next. The email server information is displayed.
    • From the Incoming mail server drop-down list, select IMAP.
    • Clear text authentication is already selected from the Log on using drop-down list.
    • The Login ID is automatically populated with your email user name, which is the part of your email address that precedes the @ symbol.

  7. Fill in the incoming mail server name in the Incoming Server field.
  8. Fill in the outgoing mail server name in the Outgoing server field, then click Next.
  9. Click Next. A message is displayed, indicating you have successfully entered the information required to set up your account.
  10. Click Finish. The wizard closes, and the email from your email inbox is displayed in your Windows Live Mail inbox.
    • If you cleared the Remember password check box, you are prompted to enter your email password.
