What are botnet attacks? How can I protect my system from them?

A botnet is a software robot that runs autonomously. Botnets can infect your computer with malicious software or infect computers to create a network of "zombie computers" to distribute software designed to do anything ranging from denial-of-service attacks, spamming, and ad insertions to stealing login IDs and financial information such as credit card numbers.

The identification of online denial of service and botnet attacks is increasing. A botnet attack frequently begins with computers belonging to individual users who become compromised through a computer virus or operating system vulnerability.

The best protection from this and all other viruses is to ensure that all necessary security updates are installed on your computer and that you maintain and use up-to-date anti-virus software.

McAfee security software is included with your Internet subscription.

Other Tips to Help Keep You Safe

  • Use a Router with NAT (Network Address Translation).
All systems connected to a router use one public IP address to connect to the Internet. This is known as your WAN Gateway. Using a router with your modem helps stop unsolicited traffic from the Internet. So, if a hacker tries to connect to your computer from the Internet, the connection is denied because your computer did not request this connection. This can prevent a weekend hacker from intruding on your network or computer.
  • Use a Firewall.
A firewall can be software or a hardware device that monitors all incoming network traffic. It permits traffic that you have approved of in advance and denies any unsolicited traffic. A firewall can make your computer seem invisible to the Internet by dropping all inbound, unsolicited Internet requests. We recommend using a hardware firewall behind your modem (or Network Interface Device) and then software firewalls on each computer system on your private network.
  • Enable Automatic Updates.
You should turn on automatic updates for your operating system and security software to ensure that you have the latest security patches and virus definitions.
